Including geogrids in the asphalt overlay of highways is crucial for improving their performance and durability. Typically constructed from fiberglass or polyester, asphalt geogrids are reinforced with an asphalt or polymer coating. By placing these geogrids within the asphalt layers of a highway, the pavement is 'stiffened.' This Pavement Stiffening increases the effectiveness of the longitudinally placed asphalt geogrids, asphalt pavements have been shown to better distribute traffic loads, thereby alleviating the intensities of stress distributions and crack development. Moreover, the asphalt geogrid enhances the ability of the asphalt concrete pavement to resist fatigue cracking due to relentless traffic. Also, it improves the crack resistance of the asphalt concrete pavement in relation to thermal fluctuations and hence reduces thermal cracking. The use of asphalt geogrid in the pavement structure increases the mechanical properties of the asphalt layer and thus the lifespan of the highway while maintaining the required smoothness and safety for driving.
